Losing your administrator password is a very annoying and frustrating problem which can be resolved in two ways. The first is to reinstall a fresh copy of XP, which will wipe your hard drive and remove all of your files and data. This is obviously a very damaging method and if you need to access the computer for an important set of documents or a meeting, you may wish to steer clear of this method. The second way is to use a password reset program to actually remove the stored password data on your computer, allowing you to log in again quickly.
If you don’t want to risk losing any data or settings from your PC, the only other way to regain access to XP is to use a “password reset” program, which is able to scan through your system and remove any of the stored password settings that are inside it. We are very lucky with Windows in that Microsoft have made all the versions of this system store passwords in the same way. This basically means that if you want to remove the password from your system, you can rely on a program to change the password files on your hard drive.
Computers store passwords in files on the hard drive. When Windows needs to protect something with a password, it checks the inputted password with the one on file. This means that if you’re able to remove the stored password, you won’t need any pass to login and you’ll regain access to your PC. Fortunately, there are software programs available which are able to do this very well – called “Password Resetter” programs.
Password Resetters are basically small programs which load up before Windows does, and then remove the stored passwords from the files on your hard drive. To use one of these tools, you first need to download one onto your computer and then it will instruct you to create a CD that it can boot from. Once it has created the CD, the software will then show you how to load it on your locked computer, and will load up before Windows to gain access to all the password files. Once you’ve loaded the program, it will automatically scan through your computer and will remove all the references to your admin password, allowing you to login quickly after a restart.
